Hidden away from the mainstream you’ll find West 14th – a New York style steakhouse – at Oceana Beach Club, situated between the two greyish apartment blocks that are Oceana Residences, on the west side of the trunk on Palm Jumeirah.
A little difficult to find perhaps, but worth the effort if paying a towering price for a mouth-watering steak agrees with your wallet.
Having been to West 14th twice before – the loud music greeting us from the terrace bar soon reminded me why we hadn’t been back.
During our previous visit we got caught in the “line of fire” between the DJ’s terrace bar music and the restaurant’s piped music, making conversation impossible.
This time, however, it was music to our ears when told that the DJ’s turntable would cease by 8 PM – and it did. Soon after the air, inside and out, was filled with wonderful live music played by an excellent jazz band – the female singer wooing us with her soulful voice. Live jazz/soul music six days a week (omitting Monday) is the perfect entertainment for an American restaurant like West 14th.
If loud music is an issue, ask to be seated away from the speakers when reserving your table – a must do at this popular spot! For special promotions/theme nights, check their website.
Once seated inside, the waiter quickly took our drinks order and soon I had an ice-cold glass of white wine in hand. Some minutes later a petit and delicious loaf of bread, and butter was placed in front of us. So far, so good!
I ordered the US Angus Tenderloin “Ladies Cut” 180 g, while my husband opted for the 250 g cut. From a selection of sauces we both chose the red wine sauce and our sides consisted of creamy spinach, mashed potatoes, city fries and grilled onion. Apart from the slightly limp and not so creamy spinach and dry city fries – this was an excellent meal with meat cooked to perfection. No need for fancy steak knives to cut through the steak – our butter knife would have sufficed!
Unfortunately, there was one flaw that can’t go unmentioned. Being served lukewarm food is NOT acceptable when paying AED 593 for two main courses, two bottles of sparkling water and one glass of white wine! OK, I had two glasses of white wine, the second one on the house after receiving apologizes from the restaurant manager.
West 14th has a lovely terrace with amazing views towards the Dubai Marina skyline. Do bring your camera for great photo opportunities!

Three days after my visit, I got an invitation to join some fabulous women for “Diva Tuesday” at West 14th. Again, great food, but this time the white wine was a far cry from being served ice-cold. Anyway, a fun evening out with free drinks, excellent music and prizes to be won!
Tuesday nights are “Ladies Night” in Dubai – a night when free drinks are on offer to attract the female population. A future blog post perhaps?
