The Dhow & Anchor – a British pub and eatery that, from a Dubai perspective, has been around for a long time. Good food, but not always consistent. However, after a long day out and about in Dubai, stopping at Dhow & Anchor for some comfort food on the way home was just what the doctor ordered. Being located in Jumeirah Beach Hotel also made parking easy. Valet, of course! Back in my early days in Dubai, Jumeirah Beach Hotel was THE hotel – and sometimes I would drop by just to enjoy a cup of coffee in the lobby lounge, Palm Court. OK, I confess… I would have a piece of cake as well, but only to enhance the flavor of my coffee. Palm Court is now undergoing renovation, scheduled to be completed medio September.
Today the old Dhow and Anchor is no more…but don’t despair! After a very successful transformation a new sleek and chic British eatery and bar, D&A (short for Dhow & Anchor), has emerged. The low ceiling and slightly enclosed rooms have been replaced by floor to ceiling windows, giving the interiors a bright and airy feel – and a great view of the Burj Al Arab. The colour scheme is pleasing to the eye with natural earthy tones. Wish I could say the same about the flat screen TVs showing major sporting events…but I guess that’s a must have in a venue like D&A. The large outdoor terrace has also been through a transformation and my preferred spot.
According to Jumeirah, D&A is a modern British restaurant, serving contemporary British cuisine. To me, the term contemporary British cuisine has been adopted to make D&A a bit more sophisticated and upmarket. The food is still traditional British grub – and that’s a good thing! According to my pork loving Scottish husband, the Bangers & Mash (Cumberland sausage, mashed potato and onion gravy) was just the way it was meant to be. My sea bass with crushed potatoes, green peas, onion, turkey bacon and clotted cream was a bit on the heavy side, but I guess the clotted cream was a giveaway. Oh well, the sea bass made up for it. It was cooked to perfection!
Dear chef: Please rename your side order of roasted root vegetables to roasted potatoes, cause that’s basically what we got…but all in all a nice meal and excellent service!
D&A is a popular and busy all day venue, starting with breakfast at 9:00. Due to high demand, D&A has a first come first serve policy.
I look forward to revisiting D&A when the weather has cooled down – and terrace seating overlooking the iconic Burj Al Arab is once again up for grabs!
